ASICs are more profitable per dollar of electricity — an Antminer KS3 is roughly 5,000× more efficient than a single RTX 3080 on Kaspa. But GPUs win on flexibility: lower upfront cost, better resale value, and the ability to switch coins if one becomes unprofitable. Which is "better" depends on what you're optimizing for.

An ASIC is built for exactly one algorithm, with no general-purpose silicon wasted on anything else. That's why the Antminer KS3 so thoroughly outperforms any GPU on Kaspa's KHeavyHash — it's not a fair fight in raw output-per-watt terms. If your only goal is maximum profit on one specific coin and you're comfortable with single-purpose hardware, an ASIC wins.
A GPU isn't locked to one coin. If Kaspa's difficulty spikes or price drops, you can point the same card at Ethereum Classic or another algorithm entirely — an ASIC can't do that. GPUs also hold resale value in the broader gaming/AI market, while a used ASIC's only buyers are other miners of that exact coin. If you already own a gaming PC, testing profitability costs nothing extra; buying a dedicated ASIC is a bigger, narrower commitment.
